5/5/93 The Palace, Albany, NY Very upbeat opening... a lil quicker than usual (but the key seems right, so I don't think it is
my DAUD's fault). The pre-Nirvana segment is a little spacey like recent versions, but isn't that long or more enchanting than
usual. It is still quite pleasant... Nirvana at 3:42... ok.. yawn... I spaced. This isn't that exciting. First shot at the Note is fine, as is
Trey's jamming around it. Second Note is sustained well by Trey, too.. Nothun special. "Boy" at 6:53. WUDMTF segment
upbeat and fiiiine.. Trey teases a lick of something in here -- a quick version of the "Who Knows" theme.. yeah, that's what this
is (Hendrix). Tramps jam... Mike's signaling. Page is noodling well... very upbeat and quite excellent tramps jam! Trey is
repetitively hitting this note, Page is wigging out, Mike and Fish are just hanging in there.. Trey starts letting loose around 10:32
or so, and the crowd starts going nuts... I think we have some guests walking on stage now. Trey is power-noodling in here, not
to mention Mike. A-ha.. there is ARU's guitarist. Tease of a lil Santana... the jam is just fiery and omnipotent in here, folks..
very strong and funky.. some nice guitar.. At 12:15 the jam EXplodes!!!!! I looooove the jamming in here!!!! This is one of my
favorite Phish moments on tape, especially around 12:30. Just a totally raging jam!! Can't really describe it, except to say that
there's some nice counterpoint between Trey and ARU's lead guitarist at different times. Otherwise, they are just jamming as
they deem appropriate... I wish someone who was at this show would review what they can remember about this spectacular
event in Phish history (yes, this is probably my favorite special guest jam, outside of maybe Bela on 8/21/93 & 10/18/94). Were
you there, AJ ? I have no idea what Trey starts "singing" around 15 mins.. can't make out any words. But it sounds cool with
this raging JAM in the background.. Some great TABLAS and TOM TOM work throughout this jam, btw.. for those of you
who enjoy the 7/25/92 YEM, this version kicks its butt imo. That 7/25/92 YEM is a crusty old white piece of dog feces next to
this Almighty YEM imo (ok maybe not that bad)... still a siiiick, absolutely magnificent groove around 17 minutes.. Around 18
minutes (or so), there's some weird talking.. as if through a megaphone (?). It's Trey.. (it is really fast and sounds like nonsense).
Meanwhile, Page is wailing away on the Piano, and the percussion section, including Fish, are having an absolutely amazing time
of it, and well, I can't hear the bass players well ;(.. the guitarists aren't making too much noise, either. Page and percussion
throughout this 18-19:30 section.. Percussion and some bass around 20 mins... very, very groovy. THIS IS THE SORT OF
JAM THAT I SEE PHISH TO HEAR!!! A full set of this would be just fine with me.. Vacuum around 23 minutes. Fish is off
his kit (and Trey goes onto it, I think..). The groove is still going in here.. Fish isn't doing that much on vacuum. Just sucking..
nothing profound, given his skill with the Electrolux.. groove picks up at 24:40 into a SKA beat!!!! =^] Total ska beat around
25 minutes, with some goofy noodling from Page (just a bit).. this doesn't last long, though. Fish gets off the vacuum.. (oh, I
forgot to mention that he blew that horn a bit in this version, too..doh) returns to the kit, and Trey gets back on the 'doc and
starts letting loose! Some great jamming around 26 minutes between ARU's guitarist and Trey.. yesssssss!!! Uh-oh.. someone
hit the vacuum a little. Sounds like ARU's guitarist or someone I don't recognize is saying something in here.. whatever. This
JAM is still just kicking butt around 27 minutes. Something about tires and traction and being ready for action... from an ARU
dude I guess.. or maybe the Dude of Life (who is allegedly in this JAM somewhere). A complete Rage of a jam.. at around
28:30, the ARU lead singer is doing that signature skat stuff.. skat singing, or whatever this form of singing is called... Trey gets
into it a little of course. Still, a serious, genuine dancin' groove is going on.. this is one hell of a "YEM" !! Around 30 minutes the
jam takes off again, and there's great guitar work from Trey and ARU's guitarist... excellent percussion, too. I really am having
trouble hearing bass.. jam basically just dies down a little and ends.. Total time 31:25 approximately. 'A' rating easily for this
absolutely spectacular jam. Wasn't much of a "YEM" I suppose, but what the hell.. definitely "hear at all costs" Phish. I
personally prefer 12/9/95 for Trey's melodious noodling, but this 5/5/93 version is nothing to snub. two cents, kind veggie
