I just wanted to provide a partial set list for Mike's special guest
appearance with the legendary Colonel  Bruce Hampton.  The other posts are
right on about the quality of the music and Mike's surprising guitar
abilities.  Look out Trey!!

There was one other Bobby Lee tune, but I can't recall it enough to even
guess at the title.  One of my favorite parts of the show was when Bruce,
who stars in Outside Out, introduced Mike and said jokingly "first he thinks
he's a movie director, now he thinks he's a guitar player"  All in all, a
really special show and a good time was had by all.  If you get the chance
to see the Code Talkers, please check them out, you won't be sorry.  They
wail with or without special guests, although I hear they are going to jam
with the incomparable Oteil Burbridge at a couple of shows in Colorado July
6th and 8th.  Calling all Colorado music lovers!!

Subject: Mike at Col. Bruce Hampton Show in Atlanta
 
After the concert last night, there was an After Phish party at the Col.
Bruce Hampton show in Little Five Points,GA at the Variety Playhouse (about
10 min from Lakewood).  Well Mike helped produce the last Col. Bruce album
and they are suppose to be good friends.  If you check out the bill it even
says "mystery surprise guests."  And sure enough, Mike showed up and hung out
in the lobby most of the night signing autographs and chatting with fans.
His was extremely gracious considering the barage of people that assulted
him.  Then at the end of the night he strapped on a Gibson guitar and rocked
out with the band.  He played phenomenal with the band, throwing in long jams
complemented by an electric banjo player from Col. Bruce's band.  He played
something like 5-6 songs (mostly blues and bluegrass), including the encore,
and it was all in a nice quaint atmosphere.  There were tapers, so look for
the boot!!!  Tonight will be another such party...who will show up
tonight?!?!?!

After the show last night(6-23-00), some friends and I went to the Variety
Playhouse in Little Five Points in Atlanta, to see Col. Bruce Hampton and
the Code Talkers. When we arrived at the show, we walked into the lobby and
immediately saw Mike Gordon holding court with a handful of people, talking
and signing the occasional autograph. I couldn't resist, I had to tell him
what an amazing show he and his bandmates put on at Lakewood. He thanked me
and I proceeded inside. The Colonel was at the end of his first set, so we
sat back and relaxed. After the set break the band minus Colonel Bruce came
out and did two songs, at the end of which Colonel Bruce finally came out on
stage followed by Mike Gordon. Bruce went straight for the microphone and
started singing the next song. Meanwhile Gordon picks up the only available
instrument onstage, Col. Bruce's 6-string Gibson Les Paul(a classic!), and
proceeds to play an entire set of screaming blues guitar! After witnessing
his moves on the bass at Lakewood, seeing him in an entirely different
context blew my mind! If you haven't seen Mike play guitar, you are missing
out on a serious treat. There are tapes available, check them out.
ps. I had no idea Gordon was so short. He looks so tall on stage.
