The Vic Theatre, Chicago IL

Whew! Good times bad times was a real surprise. I'd always heard
it on tapes, but never thought I'd hear it live. I thought those
cover days were gone. Very Hot Mike's song. Smoke and Strobe
lights caused much fun to ensue in the balcony. It looked like
they were having a good time, That's what matters.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to be there tomorrow night. Hope
someone posts the setlist. I didn't see any Phishnet shirts :(

25 days till NYE!

 Howdy Pholks!
Just got back a few hours ago from Chicago, oh boy, oh boy!
The shows were just fantastic! It was rough going for this
Phish Phreak on day one. I had a drastic ride change that had
me on the train Saturday afternoon, then I arrive and find
out my tickets for both nights were given to my housemate
over Thanksgiving and so I was out two tix for Saturday and
three for Sunday. Ooops. I got a ticket at the theatre, had
a great show, and found that my hair tie, one of my gloves,
and my sweater were all missing at the end. It wasn't what
I would call a good luck day.(It must have been Karmic punishment
for something I did). Day two and show two were the exact
opposite. The tickets came from Ann Arbor via a faxed copy
(the Vic gave us three small rectangle movie tickets as
subsitutes, which were honored without question at the door)
and i didn't lose anything. Now for show reviews:

Show #1
Where do I start? Split Open and Melt was where it
got great for me. Mound was superb, and Divided Sky was
a blessing. In set two they split up Reba with I Walk the
Line in the middle. The Reba jam was killer. Page was
having technical troubles with his piano, and it never
got completely fixed until after the show. The organ solo
during Maze was long and included some great noodling by
Page. Weekapaug was very strange, they got pretty quiet
at times and then took it way up to that place we all love
so much:-> WHIPPING POST!!!! I can't really put into
words what this song did to me. Fishman sang his ass off,
and Trey's drumming was great! He is getting a lot better
at the drums the more heplays them. The crowd was pretty quiet
for both acapella numbers which was nice. Thanks to Paul
Languedoc for playing some sweet Miles Davis right before
the first set, it got everyone in the right mood.

All in all two fine shows, i can't believe I get to see two
more this week. See you netters at the Espresso Royale Cafe
before the show. Take care of those shoes-Brian

well, first a few notes about satuday's show. the first set was really
tight,
but not entirely explosive. highights for me were chaldust torture, split
open and melt, and divided sky, featuring a nice long pause which was very
phunky. lizards was perhaps the biggest score. the band was having a
ball,
and pardon the pun, but they used this huge disco ball on the ceiling for
a
nice effect. the poor heart opening set two was pretty short, but after
that
the
set took off. tweezer smoked--trey was in very fine form. maze featured a
very nice jam by page on the organ, though this was small compensation for
the
fact that we heard little of page all night because of sound problems with
the
piano :*( weekapaug groove was also VERY hot, filled with smoke coming
from
the stage, and trampolines on i am hydrogen. and how can you forget the
highlight of the night, a whipping post by fishman, including a nice
vaccuum
jam. good times, bad times was a nice encore.

later! -------richard benjamin caplan.....rcaplan@casbah.acns.nwu.edu

Just a quick review of Phish in Chicago.

I went into the Vic with my brain overloaded with overplayed tapes, net
info, critically analyzed solos, every note and nuance memorized from
every
song of every show I have. I went into the Vic and they absolutely blew me
away, every song was fresh (Lawn Boy,to further this debate, was sweet),
they were tight as hell and I can't remember ever being so rocked; the
energy in that room could've powered Chicago for hours. I don't want to
take
up too much bandwith with this quasi-review: reviews for the specific
songs
or the people in my area (young girls who were stoned silly) are just
beyond
me. So Ill just say that Phish is better than ever, and to all of you
farther out west, you _can_ wait- they will come and you will not be
disappointed. I saw one one taper there, front row balcony, and if you or
anyone else is on this net with either shows PLEASE e-mail me.
