Subject: Garden setlist...

Well, my ears are still ringing, but fortunately I don't need 'em to do
this. Phish played for just over an hour, from 11 to midnight. Nice set
overall, IMO -- but I've been to too many one set shows this year -- and
I'm neady for a REAL show!!! Here's what I have for a setlist.
Unfortunately I managed to lose my copy so this is from memory (with some
help from Rich Fromm). Feel free to correct me on this...

Runaway Jim
Rift
Maze
Caver-->
Vacuum Solo-->
n
Stash
Squirming Coil
Sweet Adeline (A Capella)
You Enjoy Myself-->
Vocal Jam.

After the Spin Docs gave their fine hour-long show -- one I quite enjoyed
-- the second time I've seen 'em. There was a 25 min delay while the
crews reset the stage for Phish. During the break, some random comedy
team from whoknowswhere got up on the small stage (there were two stages,
BTW) and attempted, rather poorly, to entertain the audience with some
quite lame humor. They got boo'd off stage. Hilarious!

15 minutes or so later, Phish came on and opened with a rather smokin'
extend-o-jam version of 'Jim. Maze quickly followed, with a nifty solo by
Page. Cavern was more energetic than I've heard in the past, and the
audience seemed to pick up on it. The band froze just before the last
measure and Fishman came out and used the Gahden as a really neeto
vacuum-echo-chamber. This fine rendition of Fish's standard vacuum solo
was punctuated with the final bar of Cavern... hence the above notation.

Okay, this is where the setlist gets a bit fuzzy. I'm pretty sure that
Stash followed, then a really sweet Coil that I wanted to go on forever...
the band then came out and did an a capella Sweet Adeline. The closer was
YEM, and a dandy closer it was. Kind of wierd to end a show with a vocal
jam, but leave it to Phish to do somethin' outta the ord'nary.

Oh, for those people who think Phish will make it big someday... filling
arenas and selling out big indoor venues... well now they've done it
once! The place was sold out, and they can sure do it again. Phish is
popular enough around here that they'd have little difficulty filling the
Garden, say maybe next tour. Trey said at one point during tonights show,
something like: "Ever since I was a little kid, between 7 and 15 years
old, I've always wanted to play for the Boston Bruins. Well it looks like
this is as close as I'm gonna get." I wonder how the guys felt playing to
15,000 people. Must be a fair bit different than playing to the 500 of us
that filled the Campus Club last Spring.

Well, this short show was a good tease for the spring tour. See y'all in
Albany and Stony Brook!!!

...getting it clearly through alternate paths...

PS -- Matt, Lee, Amy. It was great to see y'all again! Phish on!

I'm SURE by now someone will hav eposted this, but I
haven't seen it, so here goes...:

Runaway Jim
Maze
Bouncing
Rift
Cavern->
Vacuum Solo (really solo, too!)
Cavern conclusion
Squirming Coil
Stash
Sweet Adeline
YEM->
Vocal jam

Not a bad show, though few surprises, and the sound system was TOO
LOUD!!! Loud enough that stuff distorted and sounded bad, which
indicates to me that perhaps Paul was not in complete control of
the sound. It looked like Phish's light show, though, 'coz none
of the other bands used the trees at all, and Phish had everything
going (including the BG spotlights which tumbled and dived through
the crowds ;-)). Rift was a surprise, and they did a GREAT Jim and
Maze. Cavern was Rockin' too, and YEM was, as usual, stunning.
The vocal jam was ok, though a little short, and not quite as
impressive or creative as some I've heard (feel free to argue this
point with me - or any of these points, for that matter). After
cutting apart the seats on the floor and folding them up during the
first band, Rich, Lee, Jeff, Amy, Rob, Dori (sp?) and I had plenty
of room to dance... but when Spins went on everyone around us stood
on their chairs and we found ourselves in a human pit, so we
relented and set our chairs back up. Then Rich almost killed himself
when his chair broke. You can't BUY fun like that, y'know?

I managed to miss EVERYONE at the net gathering, and I know that
the Commonwealth BC lied to us about their all ages policy.
Both Lee and Dina weren't allowed in for one reason or another,
despite assurances by the people on the Phone. Next time, let's
make SURE the place we meet allows everyone in, and I'll try to
remember to wear my net.shirt (sheepish :-)). It's not like I
don't have access to one!

Anyway, it was nice to see a Phish show again, even if it's the
FOURTH one I've seen recently that conistsed of only one set...
it's getting frustrating (though the Cali. Santana shows were
incredible... Hey Shelly!). SO.... nothin' left for it but to sit
tight and get all excited for the next FIVE shows that will be

              ALL PHISH!!!!!!!!!

Hope to see you all there!

Matt
(and Lee, implied, though he's out of commission right now...)

Hey there! The Garden show was really great. I don't exactly remember the
set list but they openned with Runaway Jim and played Maze, Mound,
Bouncing around the Room, Cavern, YEM, Sweet Adeline, and a few others.
Fish did a solo on the vacuum cleaner, without the bagpipe extension, and
it actually sounded really good. Sweet Adeline also came out well, I was
in front of the large speakers next to the stage so I'm not sure how good
the sound was in the back. The place was packed and we could see people
bouncing all over the place. It was weird to be in such a big place. They
did the Doh signal towards the end and I couldn't tell how many people
picked it up.

The place seemed to be under a lot of control by the security guards. A
guy was carried out the back in handcuffs after running up on stage during
the Spin Doctors. Supposively he just ran up on stage, ran around, waved
to the audience and then jumped down. As he was returning to his seat he
was abducted by security and carried out back. I didn't catch the Spin
Doctors though I heard that they played well.

I met Amy, who was not working the concession stands at this show but will
be on the tour starting in November. In case anyone hasn't read the
newsletter, Amy is a friend of the band from UVM and will selling phish
stuff at the shows. We were told in the newsletter to say hi to her and
she is really nice and mellow. Two summers ago the band played at her
horse farm. Has anyone put the newsletter onto the net so that everyone
can read it? Maybe we could scan in those lovely graphics.

Oh about the meeting place. I had misplaced, it was probably in a
different pair of jeans, my drivers license and was not allowed into the
CBC with my brown ID. This was pretty upsetting and made it hard to see
people especially since security was so tight. People without ID's were
not let in either. (it's a syllogism) I'm psyched to seeing more people on
tour...Rich, Shelly, JG, Jack, Jeff, Matt, Amy, Lee, etc.....

I thoroughly enjoyed Friday's event in Boston. Thanks to WBCN people
for putting on a good event, and especially for pricing the tickets
right. It made the ride from Burlington worthwhile. Spins were hot,
great dancing warm up. Saw the end of Material Issue (ok), Michael Penn
(huh?) witnessed my first booing off of stage when some 20,000 people
chanted "You Suck! You Suck! You Suck!" to the most unfunny of
comedians ever. Phish played from 11:10 to 12:10, (I hate it when they
leave the clock on) Previously posted setlists accurate (1st one
missing Bouncing) Impressions:
1. Jim - well played, but I'm not so sure I like it as an opener.
2. Bouncing - kinda weak version.
3. Stash - hot.
4. Coil - anyone else hear Mike play the James Bond Theme?
5. YEM - extra funky, but did they play all of it?
6. Vacuum Solo - sounded excellent through a large P.A.; disagree with
statement that it was too loud (at six o'clock, in aisle behind first
seat section, the sound was very good).
7. Vocal Melt - as closer; heh, heh, heh.
Boston Garden as Venue - what it lacks in soud quality and spaciousness
it more than makes up in character. One can't help but be impressed by
the sports history that has gone down in the place, as evidenced by the
Bruins and Celtics banners (anyone remember the Dead's tie-dye
banners?), and it has lots of neat nooks and crannies to hang out in
too. As much as I dislike Worcester, IMHO the Centrum is the best
sounding venue of its size in the Boston metro area. I believe it has
significantlly smaller capacity, like 14K while BG is @20K, but it
offers what I consider to be superior acoustics for a metal can stapled
to a slab of concrete.
Commonwealth Brewery - we had fun there before the show, but afterwards
it sucked. Not nearly as packed as when that other really good band was
in town, and the regulars took the place back while we were in the
show. Still, the black & tans and guacamole were killer. . .
Boston - driving in Boston is the worst. . .
Stay tuned for St. Mike's & Albany info.
Peace, Love & Happiness,

Well, I might as well add my $0.02 about the garden show...

First of all, I sincerely apologize to anyone who was not let in by the
Commonwealth Brewing Company. But when I call a restaurant and am told
over the phone that anybody is let in to the restaurant, I usually don't
come to the conclusion that they're lying. I even asked over the phone if
they ever alter their policy, like if there's a concert at the Garden and
it's really crowded. And I was told "No, this is a family restaurant." I
informed the people at the door of what I was told over the phone, but
they didn't really seem to care. I agree with Lee's suggestion. In the
future, let's only have net gatherings at places that are not primarily
bars.

We didn't even get to the Commonwealth until 7, so I didn't make it into
the show until 8. Lots of people hanging outside the Garden, many of them
looking for tickets (yes, the Garden did sell out, and from the looks of
things most people were there to see Phish). I got my first uneasy
feelings about seeing Phish in such a large arena when the security guard
wouldn't even let me bring in a plastic bottle of water. He also wouldn't
let me pour it out and bring in the bottle. I don't know why I even
bother trying to reason with security, because it never accomplishes
anything.

We missed the Levellers. I can't remember the name of the guy who we
caught a little bit of as we were coming in, but he was pretty good.
Material Issue was loud, and since I don't really have anything good to
say about them, I won't bother saying anything else. Michael Penn was
next, and he was pretty good too. As Matt already commented, by the time
the Spin Doctors went on, we were forced to abandon our plan of folding up
the chairs for dance room, because now the entire rest of the arena was
vertially about 2 feet above us.
I thought the Spin Doctors were pretty good too. (Sorry if I seem to be
lacking adjectives here.)

It was great to see Phish again, but I am getting a little sick of one
hour doses of Phish. This is the third time in a row (UMass, and opening
for Santana @ Grate Woods) that I've seen an abbreviated show, and I'm
really jonesing for a complete show. I don't necessarily mind the thought
of seeing Phish in larger venues (although it was kind of weird seeing
them at the Garden, especially since the last time I saw them headline was
in Philly at the Chestnut Cabaret - just a little bit smaller), but what
bothers me is the other extraneous bullshit that seems to go along with
larger venues. During the first song, I managed to somewhat bust my chair
from dancing on it. (Why do they put chairs on the floor? I, for one,
wish they didn't.) So I moved towards the end of the row, but then I kept
getting hassled by security for dancing in the aisle. So I decided to try
my luck elsewhere. Heading towards the back of the Garden, I found this
huge open space where the second stage had been! But after dancing there
for about 10 seconds, I was informed tha that I'd have to return to my
seat. And so on...I won't babble endlessly, but I just don't appreciate
the scene of a larger show. Like after the show was over, and I started
heading in one direction so that I could pick up my jacket, only to be
grabbed by security and told "The exits this way! The show's over."
Geez, excuse me for trying to pick up my belongings.

Anyway, musically the show was fine, but there was nothing spectacular or
unusual. I wonder how many people were thinking "what the hell is he
doing?" as Fishman is blasting away on the vaccum in front of 15,000
people. It must be quite a rush for the band, playing in front of such a
large venue.

Sorry if this posting had a bit of a negative tone. I really did have a
good time at the show, but I'm eagerly awaiting fall tour.
