7/31/93 Masquerade Park, Atlanta, GA (Rvwd 8/95) MikeS starts out well,
but nothing special. Tramps-fog segment
contains some Zepplin "Whole Lotta Love" (??) teases, or some Zepplin
tune (I don't want to strain my memory on this one..
you can correct me if I'm wrong, as always). Mike starts that Zepplin
teasing. The jam is fun, raw, and the main theme of
whatever Zepplin tune this is is repeatedly played. There are also
some tasty fills from Trey. This is definitely one of the more fun
tramps segments I've heard of late. The post-tramps segment jam (comes
in later than usual.. 5:30 or so) is disjointed and
chaotic, as is the norm for this segment, with Trey picking away spookily
above everyone else. He gets stuck on a little lick
(with Fish hanging with him) for a little bit around 6:30. In general,
this is a typical post-tramps segment, with a lot of eerie stuff
that isn't together at all (deliberately so). Nothing sticks out as
especially creative, unfortunately. At 8:08 or thereabouts, the
MikeS theme returns. By 9:10, H2 starts (well, Fish starts it), but
by 9:19 Trey decides to play Leprechaun. What an
astonishingly grand composition, this Leprechaun. Wow. Weekapaug comes
in at 13:06 ish. The opening solo from Mike is not
at all spectacular; very typical in its complexity and style -- just
very laid back (as if Mike was deliberately repressing his urge to
take it to another plane). The Weekapaug jam starts out mellowly, but
proceeds excellently as usual with fantastic, high-speed
and fiery licks from Trey. He sustains a note here and there for effect,
but in general he hits quite a number of frets in this
genuinely HOT jam! By 16:30 he is involved in one of his unduly frightening
displays of guitar virtuosity. This is an absolutely
magnifiscent, nearly spell-binding, non-stop Weekapaug jam, folks!
It is SICK!! No "quiet" mode, here! It is also,
unfortunately, very short. The final verse comes in early at 17:57,
but, frankly, this was one hell of a Weekapaug, and in
conjunction with a good MikeS that had Zepplin teasing, an above average
'Groove for sure. 18:39 total time, B+ rating.. I
highly recommend picking this up.
