Amazing quality copies of this show are out there,
and it is -- in my opinion -- the Cornell University
5/8/77 of Phish tapes, on account of its wide
distribution (but NOT its prowess, musically, as a
show). It has by far my favorite version of Contact
(the horns are just outrageously funny on this
version, and perfect), and perhaps Gumbo, which is
simply Amazing. The Tweezer really isn't that great,
unfortunately, but I thought the MikeS Groove was
pretty good. This is a longer Mike's Song than usual
for 1991, at 7:19 or so. It is a really groovy
version, and incl. the GCH. Gears and Grippo add a
bit to it, and the whole thing works fairly well.
Mike himself even has a little solo (sorta) at one
point in this MikeS, for a few seconds. Just after
the 5 min point, this Song takes on an interesting
theme, and when Trey -- and then Grippo -- kick in,
it really wails.. Good stuff, but I think recent
Mikes Grooves still blow these old versions out of
the water.
H2 kicks in around 7:19, and it takes awhile for Trey
to come in, since Page is playing pedal/chord games
with the opening H2 chords (crescendo, diminuendo,
or whatever the musical lingo is.. my
musicalinguistic abilities have readily vacated my
brain, having been replaced with critical social
theory's language game). Standard H2 once Trey and
Page begin the theme.
Weekapaug comes in at 10:12, and it seems a bit
faster than it has been lately ("lately" meaning of
versions reviewed recently..). Tease of 'Bonanza'
again, only this time Trey starts it and then Page
finishes it, which sounds pretty amusing.. good to
know that they are listening to one another. ;^)
This version bears witness to Trey at his 1991 best.
Sick, beautiful jamming, that he takes places. By
the 14 min mark, Trey is hosing off everyone in the
crowd.. This groove is without question better than
average for the 1986-1991 period, but I still think
it isn't even competitive with 'experimental"
Weekapaugs, that are Experiences in themselves and
not merely versions of a song. The horns kick in,
but unfortunately don't add to much to the jam (in
fact, they kinda detract from it, in my opinion). Oh
well.. it was really good up until this point. Not
the horns fault.. It's just I know they can be better
on this tune. This version still has an enormous
amount of character. It wouldn't be fair if I didn't
give it at least a 5.25 rating, but I'm going to be
UNFAIR, because in the universe of Mike's Grooves,
this version isn't even average. It is LONG, ending
at around 16:09 for the whole groove, making it the
longest that I've reviewed to date, I believe.
Nonetheless, 4.5 rating. It just gets soooo much
better. [Editor's note: I was a jerk. This is a C+
(great+) version easy.]
