Day everybody! It's snowing! In light of the holiday, I'm sending this
review out to my EX-girlFriend, M.K.K. Why? Because she goes to Penn State
where this Gin is from. Happy Valentines Day "Evie"... -------------------
BathtubGinFiles #11 10/17/96 Bryce Jordan Center; Penn
State University
GinStats: Set II Time: 9:22 (Thanks for the sweet DAUD1,
TPH) After the Torturous Chalkdust, we are led into the Bathtub at 0:00
with the standard, typical opening; contains all the usual hurrah, batteries
not included. At 0:15 there's a complete pause..now *this* is interesting!...then,
Page jumps in at 0:17->0:50 at first doing some rather FaNcY decoration
of Rhapsody in Blue until that melts into Purple Hearts and that there
then um well....You know, some people *play* the piano. Page lovingly *attacks*
it with a ferocity and an agony that only lovers know... Lyrics Segment:
0:51 Page Fill 1: 1:23 -> 1:31 with a glorious crescending bubbly burp.
Fill 2: 2:04->2:21 First chop-surfing on a surfboard of chords and then
finally landing at the Rhapsody where this all began so many years before.
FAUCET: 2:37 Ayup...it's definately '96 - Trey displays his awesome tone
and sustain, but this section is no longer as tight as it once was. Fairly
typical '96 rendition. SINGING W/THE FAUCET: 3:19 ...maybe??? I mean, Mike
is doing his usual stating of the obvious (singing "Bathtub Gin" so we
know what song it is) Yes we know, Mike. Yes, yes, we even wrote it down
on the setlists already! :) But the others are curiously barely singing,
scating, or whatever...c'mon, what are you guys thinking? At 4:01 FINALLY
they remembered what this section was all about and subsequently we can
all breathe easier -- a fine, fine last run-through after a few warm-up
attempts. WATER FROM THE FAUCET: 4:35 via sustain and a few seconds of
"Where do we go now?" although you'd never know it, since it's so smooth.
Trey knows where it's headed...he hears the voices calling...he's heard
the sad tale, but Trey has another tale in mind...one that takes us to
all places ominous, dark and evil. (Trey? It's not Halloween.) He knows
this, but he can't help it. Something is dragging him to the lower regions
of the 'doc. Trey fights back, he's on our side!!, and at 5:45 we're back
gloroiusly to the CFL....beautiful return....and he knows it! - He stays
in this crowd-approved region for awhile, continuing on with the CFT, that's
"T" as in "Theme" as in "variations on..." Classic Faucet Theme (From the
Bottom of the Bathtub's drain.) The others hold their ground, some nice
rolls, fills, and somersalts by Fish, at 6:48 especially. Mike and Page
order up their usual. THE DARK SIDE pulls Trey in again, ecouraging him
to visit the lower regions of the dark 'doc, but we know he wants the Light,
even if he doesn't Remain there all the time. We know he wants it - he's
on the dark side, but he's giving us the wink-wink nudge-nudge to let us
know that it's all okay, by means of the secret code: Operation EveryCFT-420:
Light from the Dark, Morning from Night, And at 7:14 another glorious return!!
We're back in the Classic Octave Zone! But the dark side calls yet again....Trey
doesn't yield, and he fights it with sheer licks of light. Here's a true
St.Valentine for 'ya. At 8:48 there's another glorious return, homecoming,
whatever you want to call it. At 9:16 Trey confirms that he's a Soldier
of Love ...um, well at least he confirms that he's still playing Bathtub
Gin as he sustains notes from the Faucet Lick with all the glory of the
great magician he is. You can hear Mike sing "Bathtub" once, very faintly,
in the last several seconds but only if you strain to hear it. Trey's working
his way through the lick, but he's still a few seconds away from finishing
it when suddenly -- It's a bird! NO - It's a plane! NO! It's a...it's a...
Well, I don't know what it is but it's NO WAY TO END A SONG! ENDS: 9:22
and it's confusing to say the least. Well, MKK, so was our ending, I guess.
Just like ours, Trey has returned from the unknown to call us gloriously
back into the Bathtub BUT before he's allowed to finish, the song just...*stops*.
HALTS. No warning, no refrain -but what really ruins it is that there's
no time for resolution. They all end, but some reluctantly, and Trey and
Fish are just a li'l off from each other. It seems to me that Trey is just
a few notes away from resolving the tension, but before he can, boom -
it's just over with, done. Capeesh. What the hell? Just like us, M.K.,
this song's time had come to end, but endings are a part of it, and if
you ruin that, you ruin the song. Endings don't mean "halt!" It means first
"*Bring it to* a halt." It means allowing Trey to get that last note in
there to RESOLVE things... had he only been able to do this, the ending
wouldn't have been too much of a surprise, and there would be a feeling
of finalization to the song. Maybe the "other" perspective, would be that
Trey should have been listening and should have known to say-his-say sooner.
Or that Trey would have noodled forever had he been allowed to...that he
was fillabusting it. Of course, either way you you look at it, we -the
audience- are left hanging in tension, unsatisfied, confused, but then
the Scent of A Mule war begins, effectively letting the show go on, but
ruining the chances of this Gin being a Mighty One. Well, at least the
jam part was good. We had a few good jams ourselves, M.K. Rating: 82
