Hi Friends!!!

Sorry for my delay in getting some AIRs out, but I had an exam this week
that was just killing me! = /

Well, I am back and this time I thought I would get into a particular
version of Antelope from 89 that occurred at a wedding, that’s right, a
wedding.  It is funny to hear people in the background casually mingling
and having drinks, kind of like the Dinner and a Movie studio version.

Someone is playing the trombone in the background throughout, although not
the best player, I think it is one of the band members (Fishman maybe).

Here is the vital info(from HPB):

8/12/89  Burlington Boat House, Burlington, VT
Blue Sky#-> Suzie Greenberg-> AC/DC Bag-> Ya Mar-> Rocky Top-> On Your Way
Down-> Wonderful You#-> Swing Tune-> I Didn’t Know-> You Enjoy Myself->
Possum-> Icculus*-> Run Like an Antelope
This “show” was at a wedding.  # First time played.
* Dedicated to the newlyweds

Icculus:-- before antelope and it is always a treat.  But this one is
pretty short... after the ‘monkey instrumentalist’ moves from trombone to
the drums and they kick off:

Antelope -- Intro:  long pause before they get into it, but Trey gets
things rolling and Page is close behind.  Fish is noticeable, gleaming, I
am sure!  Uh oh!!  Here is the bad trombone again, pretty funny.  No
noticeable flubs, I would hope not, they play this like every night this
year.  Big-band feel all the way into the...:

Opening theme: 2:20 Weak if any Pows! to get the opening theme rolling.  I
don’t think this is a full amplification show, being a wedding and all...
it sound like of ridiculous!

Trill!: 2:53 one of the weakest trills I have heard, I think they are
playing a very low intensity version on purpose so that the guests don’t
get frazzled, but come on... a nice rip would be lovely!

Key Change to Em: 3:00 pretty nice and smooth... the Em jam is in progress
with Trey up to bat first!!  Here is that trombone zooming by like a
jet-plane!!  It can’t be Fish because he is on the drums, so...
Solid work all the way before the first gear change.  Page is really
focused and Trey is working hard.  The jam is really coherent and
definitely headed in a very nice direction musically, but it lacks
intensity as we jump into:

Second Gear: 4:40  a weak climax but very smooth... the volume and power
is not there but the finesse and smooth lines are apparent.  The trombone
is blasting away again and you can’t really hear and they push into...

Third gear: 5:30 Trilling like nuts and the trombone guy is just blasting
them out volume wise... perhaps they give him/her a look because the
horning stops after a point.  The jam is progressing through its course at
worp speed, and the whole jam so far has been ultra-compact, as if we were
getting the abridged version... oh well.  It is OK this is not really a
concert so...  the climax is a bit disappointing before we fall off into
the:

Pre-Marco-Groove: 6:52 very nice and relaxed groove, Mike is so there, it
hurts!  This is just a nice, relaxing night.  Probably at the wedding of a
good friend and they are taking it easy and having a good time... the
groove shines through, but is short as Trey hurries into-

Ry, Ry, Racco!! 6:19

MARCO ESQUANDOLAS: 6:24  Trey repeats and introduces Marco Esquandolas!
Trombone work... Trey yelling Marco as if to introduce the trombone player
as Marco... I guess this would have worked better if the guy/girl new how
to play a bit better, but the whole thing is fun anyway!  = P

Happen you to have any *bleep*, man?
(I don’t know what this is in reference to...)

High Gear Theme:6:54
Pretty mellow... I don’t know, I think this song should be all the way or
no way.  This laid back version is nice if you are drunk at a wedding
perhaps, but at a concert, no way!
Runs are even slow and stuff...
Trey:- Set the Gear shift: 7:30 totally unenthusiastic... pathetic!
Page is pretty good though throughout the whole thing and he adds some of
his magic to the end of this one... really sweet!
End:  8:30  on the dot.  A really short, slow, and not altogether intense
version.  It is interesting though, to hear them play in a non-concert
setting.  Again, I guess I am a fan of Antelopes intensity and so this one
really didn’t do it for me.  The trombone guy/girl was a bit annoying, but
given the circumstances, I am sure you had to be there, right?  Anyway,
the show is great and there are decent audience copies floating around...
be sure to check it out because there is a really fantastic set list with
Blue Sky and the like.  Take care everyone, I will try to get an other out
before tomorrow, but if not I will see you at Spokane, Vancouver, Portland
and Seattle.  Come and talk to me!! I will be in the taper’s section and I
would love to hear about your favorite Antelope, I will be wearing a
brown-leather outback hat, glasses and I have short brown hair.

Take it easy and may the force be with you, always,

Victor Szalvay (under the protection of the Captain, as usual).
