Antelope in Review Pt.5 7/12/88
Hi Everyone,

Firstly, I’d like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Rosemary for
including my AIR segments in her great digests.  I know that a lot of
people read the digests and skip the newsgroups so I am glad that lots of
you are getting to read this stuff.

Secondly, thanks very much to everyone for sending in and suggesting their
favorite Antelopes for me to review!! I am a bit over-whelmed but will try
to get to every request.  Today’s antelope was requested by an enthusiast
of AIR and actually spun me a tape of the show, and so I want to look at
it now (Thanks Lucas!).

This show has traditionally been dubbed the _Cantaloupe_ show... for
reasons that will become obvious as you read the review.  An early show,
with a great setlist (imo).  Some of you may be getting this show in the
form of the _Gotta Have It_ OE trees (I think it is the Junta tree), but
unfortunately the setlist for their tape doesn’t include this tremendous
Antelope...  I checked the HPB and the show is marked as having this song,
so they might have a problem there.  Anyway, enough babble and hyping,
here we go!

7-12-88 Sam’s Tavern- Burlington, VT Set I (last song of set)

AC/DC Bag-- A very nice jam segment brilliantly fades into...

Antelope-- Intro Segment:  Very laid back and comfy. Nothing outstanding,
all Trey at first, but Mike is right there to support the idea.  Page is
very much in the background and Fish must have his head up his ass
until....

2:20  Opening Theme:  Very subdued with no reaching at all.  Trey with
some very controlled and nice phrasings.  Very solid
2:53 Trill!!  Pretty smooth with nothing special...
2:58  Key Change to Em--  Trey seems to think he is still in the Opening
theme as he plays a couple of bars of riffs with that feel.  He corrects
and we are on our way.  Page starts in and Page and Trey start building as
usual on the backs of Mike and Fish.  Fish is extremely quite throughout
this segment (?).  The bass and drums are keeping  the intensity low, but
P & T was it to take off and start in with some inspiring jamming.  Page
is all over the board, really smart and up with Trey.  Trey is getting
very articulate here with some really nice stuff.  FINALLY, Mike starts to
submit to the intensity and then..
7:00 Second gear.  Really nice stuff by everyone solid jamming and
intensity from Fish, even.  Trey sees and new direction and builds up a
dizzying whirlwind-type phrase which explodes into...

7:38 Third gear!!  Hot and wild!!  Very enthusiastic jamming and building
by everyone and they are all in this one together.  The mood is nothing
but somber, not foreshadowing the rapidly approaching Marco-segment at
all!!  Intense jamming and less then modest guitar work from Trey.  They
reach with all their might and hit another gear!!!

9:10 4th gear.... the intensity is mind splitting and then a well executed
build into... another gear...!!

10:00  5th gear... are we driving a semi-truck here or what?  The jam

Pre-Marco-Groove:  10:40  Mike a Fish take the wheel while Trey steps back
and wipes his brow.  solid groove, but nothing interestingly out of place
until...
Trey: Ry, Ry, Rocco!!
In an I-told-you-so manner... (slight pause)

11:01 Marco Esquandolas!  Happen you to have any spike, man?
The question coming directly after announcing Marco, pretty unusual, I
think...

11:38 Gearshift Theme:  Trey sounds a bit out of tune for a second,
problem solved...  Unusual sound to the RUN, RUN, RUN chorus in the
background.
But then!!! Out of no where!!!  Instead of continuing with the traditional
_Set the Gearshift_ segment, Trey starts in with:

“Walk into the Supermarket...  Watch the electronic doors open magically
before as step on the Black Pad....(pause)  Slowly walk down the isles
towards the produce section... (RUN chant in the background switches
magically to ROLL, ROLL, ROLL)  Past the oranges
Past the Macintosh Apples, over look the avocados... Past the
vegetables... head towards the ripe fruit that lies in front of you like a
beacon, you see it!!! You reach out your hand!!!! You lift the fruit into
the air!!!  You raise your arms... and you!!... and you!!!

You’ve got to roll like a cantaloupe, out of control!!!
(they repeat this, instead of Run Like an Antelope)
End at 14:30  (Thank you!! Thanks very much!! Good night, thanks for
coming down!!)

A remarkable version!!!  I would have to say that this is one of the
greats simply because of the change up in themes.  I welcome any
additional comments and observations so please send them my way.
If you are into antelope, you simply neeeeeeed this tape!!!  Take care
everyone and thanks for letting me throw in my $.02, til next time...
peas,
