MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 214

Welcome to the 214th edition of the Mystery Jam Monday. My good friend Pete had to run off to Florida last minute, and asked me to step into the void. Unfortunately I don't think Pete will be catching the Orlando Stash on this trip, but perhaps he can introduce his kids to the Chilling Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House, since I'm pretty sure the original 1964 record album was published by Disney Records. Anyway have fun Pete, and good luck everyone: The winner will receive an MP3 code good for a free download of any show, courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. To win, be the first person to identify the song and date of the mystery jam clip. Each person gets one guess per day, with the second “day” starting after I post the hint. A hint will be posted on Tuesday if necessary, with the answer to follow on Wednesday. Enjoy!

Update March 8: And... the referee throws out the yellow flag. We have a couple of technical defaults at play here. The MJM Jury has deliberated, and decided that the fairest course is to call MJM 214 a draw and double the prize for MJM 215. At issue are 1) @sirhotpants correctly guessing the right song, but incorrect version, and then posting a giveaway hint to all others after realizing his mistake; 2) @VanNicky75 picked up on @sirhotpants's clue, but technically, he had already submitted his guess for the day (Tahoe Tweezer, which, while it may have been in jest, is a guess nonetheless). Pete and I are NOT counting this as a win for the blog, as the 8/21/87 McGrupp was correctly identified by the users. But it's not being counted as a loss either. It's simply not being counted. Next week's winner will receive two free download codes.

Guys and Gals - We just want to remind you all of a couple of fairly simple rules: 1) you get one guess per day; day 2 begins AFTER a hint is posted; and 2) if you figure out the answer after you make a guess, please don't spoil it by posting something that gives the answer away to others, like the case this week. That's it. MJM 215 will be back as usual next week. Thanks again to Pete for letting me host. I had fun watching many you try to tree a Possum that wasn't there.

Doesn't have the turnaround for Possum, and the overall band/gear sound is too early for CDT...

Couldn't have set it better, much as I love ucpete :)

My first thought was Lushington, but immediately replaced by "early Chalkdust." Sadly, my knowledge of early Phish is subpar and my layover isn't longer for me to fish around.

That was my conclusion after listening to the first CDT. The sound in the clip is too immature (I don't mean that in a bad way) to be from 1991. Gotta be earlier. But hey, you never know.

It sounds like Page is on the electric piano, and has some organ going too. When did he add these to his rig?

funkbeard Yes. It does sound chalkdustish, but undefined. Possum-like, and also undefined. Which got me thinking... most likely an early Bowie jam. Noisy.

What's funny about that Whipping Post "jam" is that it would probably agitate and stump more than this week's jam.

And what's funny about this week's jam is that I typed in "Phish sounds like Possum" into a search engine and one of the first results was a link to the @andrewrose comment above.

@uctweezer send me a PM when you get the chance because I've got a guest jam for you to spin.

mcgrupp81 I was reading the Pharmer's Almanac yesterday after listening to this clip and I ran into the 8/21/87 show and said to myself that it would be embarrasing if a show listed as one of the top 25 shows in Phish 1.0 didn't have a jam from it identified by MJM participants. I can still remember one of my college buddies who got me into Phish had this in his tape collection and lent it to me. People today would be shitting themselves if they got a Dog Log opener followed by that setlist.

uctweezer @The__Van (and @sirhotpants): Don't worry, we know that these were honest mistakes. We'll just all take a mulligan on this one and take this as a reminder to follow the rules carefully so that the Blog can properly award codes to the true winner each week, and so that we're sure the winner was the one who found the answer first, on their own. We had considered other options here, e.g. awarding two codes, giving the code to @hai_hatto (whose first guess was the correct answer), etc. It was a tough call as there was no clear winner, so in the end we felt the fairest thing to do was to nullify the whole thing and give away two codes next week. I trust everyone understands that logic and is cool with that; if not, feel free to shoot either DFB or me a PM to discuss.

sirhotpants Hey y'all- Really sorry for the botched spoiler this morning. Haven't gotten an MJM yet and only rarely put up a guess. Today I was checking it out over the morning cereal and realized nobody had said McGrupp, which had some out-there buildups but I recognized the chord voicing and era from that. I read @mcgrupp81's comments and shot in the dark I put the '85 McGrupp > Whipping Post. Then had a bout of serious l'esprit d'escalier as I was closing the window, posted the second guess, and...
